Gemmology is the scientific study of gemstones. The GAA is a non-profit organisation established in 1945 for people interested in learning about gemstones and is recognised by the Jewellery industry both in Australia and overseas. The GAA's aims include:

  • To advance the science of gemmology in Australia and in particular to encourage by all means the more practical studies in gemmology.

  • To provide an up to date library and information bureau with reliable data for members.

  • To provide an up to date laboratory conducted by a qualified gemmologist for the testing of gemstones.

Whether you are a professional jeweller, a shop assistant, an Antique Dealer or a dedicated hobbyist the GAA has a course to suit your needs.

With our impressive building at 380 -382 Spencer St, West Melbourne we now have even better facilities to offer you an ever-increasing range of courses to help you increase your sales and your areas of expertise.

History of the Victoria Division

On the 24th April 1946, a meeting was held for the purpose of considering the extension of GAA sponsored gemmological instruction into the state of Victoria. From there the newly formed Branch began to grow, diligently guided by enthusiastic, dedicated gemmologists.

In the early 1950’s the Branch, together with the Retail Jewellers Association of Victoria and the Horological Guild of Victoria, united to purchase premises in Richmond. This was the home of the GAA until 1998 when much larger, centrally situated premises were purchased in Spencer Street. Now the Division looks forward, well prepared to teach gemmology into the 21st century.
