What Makes Sapphires Special and Where Do They Come From?
In the latest episode of ABC Radio’s Nightlife series Romancing the Stones, Suzanne Hill speaks with third-generation gem merchant Grant Hamid, of Hamid Bros in Melbourne (established 1898), about what makes sapphires so unique and where they are sourced from.
Grant, a former president of the Gemmological Association of Australia, brings both professional insight and family legacy to the mic. He explains how sapphires are a variety of corundum, and how trace elements like iron, titanium, chromium or nickel create the stunning array of sapphire colours — from classic blue to rare padparadscha, teal, apricot, parti, pink, yellow, green and more.
He explains that sapphires — particularly blue sapphires — are found in Australia, and highlights how our local gems are recognised for their quality. He shares insights into where sapphires are sourced globally, touching on regions such as Sri Lanka, and discusses the beauty and diversity of coloured stones.
Grant also discusses various treatments commonly applied to rubies and sapphires, such as heat treatment, and addresses the importance of disclosing certain treatments to consumers. He touches on the topic of synthetic gemstones, and the role of gemmological knowledge in distinguishing natural from man-made stones.
