Welcome to
The Gemmological Association of Australia

You have reached the home page of our association, an internet resource for our members and those who have an interest in gems and gemmology. Our website has recently had a makeover, and we hope you like the new format. Please feel free to let us know your thoughts on what you think of it!

Coloured Gems

Our association is Australia’s traditional gemmological educator. Since 1945, the Association has been responsible for producing Australia’s gemmologists by educating and updating members of the gem and jewellery industry, and the general public, about all aspects of gemstones and their substitutes.

The objects of the GAA -

  • To promote the study of gemmology in Australia.
  • To promote the study of Australian gemstones and gem deposits.
  • To conduct and publish research into gemstones, gem-related materials such as synthetics and imitations, gem testing instruments and techniques.
  • To establish and control educational programs for gemmology.
  • To establish Divisions in each State of Australia to implement and teach GAA-approved courses in gemmology.
  • To cooperate with other like minded organisations, both in Australia and overseas, in the promotion of gemmology.

Members of the GAA also receive a quarterly issue of "The Australian Gemmologist" — the informative and prestigious gemmological journal of the association.
